Mysteries

I’ve never wanted to read mystery stories. I have dealt with enough murders at work. But mysteries have always fascinated me. Missed connections and chance encounters, identity shifters and forgotten luggage, letters dropped on the ground, people who vanish but live on. In these days of GPS-equipped phones and credit reporting agencies, can anyone erase a life and start again? What do we lose when no one gets lost any more?

This is Donald Albert Caldwell, though he was known by a different name when this photo was taken in Europe before World War II. He vanished from his family for more than 40 years before resurfacing in 1970. Months later he was dead. I’ve been researching his life for 15 years.
