In April 2025, a consortium of news organizations that includes the Minnesota Star Tribune published a multi-part series about the fate of wetlands in the Mississippi River watershed following the federal government’s historic retreat from protections under the Clean Water Act. I was a co-editor with Tegan Wendland on this project, and worked with Jared Whalen to produce this interactive tour of the wetlands, past and present, from the bogs to the bayous. The wetlands shown in the 1857 Missouri map were ditched and drained to convert the land to row crops.
