This low-quality image from me depicts a phenomenon extraordinary enough that it made a scientific journal, in this case, Cat News from the International Union of Conservation Scientists. In September 2023, I was traveling in Bolivia with several wildlife biologists on a mammal-watching safari led by Nick’s Adventures. On a road in Kaa-Iya del Gran Chaco National Park, we came across a puma (also known as a mountain lion, cougar, panther, etc.) which is a carnivorous beast, of course. It was trotting behind, and sometimes beside, a South American tapir that seemed entirely unconcerned about being eaten by the big cat. This went on for long enough that the scientists with me concluded it was “stalking horse” behavior. The puma was using the tapir as cover as it hunted smaller game. This week, Cat News published the story, and I’m proud to say I have my first byline in a scientific journal. My role was minimal: I confirmed that what the scientists saw, I saw as well.
